As the holiday season approaches, my husband and I find ourselves reflecting a bit extra on the memory of our daughter, Janessa, and the love we hold for her. Because she is not here with us to shower her with our love and spoil her on Christmas morning, we have honored her memory each year by selecting a young girl her should-be age to receive gifts. This tradition has brought us comfort and a sense of connection, allowing us to share our love and joy, and her, with others.
This year, we are doing something a little different. We are dedicating our annual holiday gift drive to another cherished family member, Jeanne, our daughter’s great-grandmother who is currently battling dementia. In honor of her strength and resilience, we are focusing our efforts on bringing joy to the residents of the long-term care home where Jeanne resides. Jeanne’s wing is home to 26 women and 16 men, all of whom deserve a bit of holiday cheer.
November is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, which affect so many families around the world. Over 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, and this number is projected to rise to nearly 13 million by 2050. Dementia not only affects those who are diagnosed but also deeply impacts their loved ones and caregivers. Many of our patients have experienced the heartache that comes with a family member’s diagnosis, and we know our family is not alone in this struggle. Bringing joy and comfort to individuals living with these conditions is now a cause close to our hearts.
After observing the patients and speaking with caregivers, we have compiled a wish list of the following items:
- Pajamas: Comfortable and cozy pajamas can provide warmth and a sense of comfort.
- Baby Dolls and Stuffed Animals: These items can offer comfort and a sense of companionship, especially for those who find solace in holding something soft and familiar.
- Model Cars: These can be a source of joy and a wonderful way to spark conversations and memories.
- Fleece Throw Blankets: Adds comfort to their bed during these chilly winter months.
